The VIP team produced a free research-informed primary book entitled: ‘Learning to Live with Fog Monsters’, as a new learning resource for 7 to 11-year olds (Key-stage 2).
Our book for primary school children draws on children’s experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic, and highlights the impacts of invisible threats and their mitigation through the eyes of two 10-year-olds.
It is designed to provide support to teachers and others supporting children’s wellbeing, who are tackling complex issues like pandemics, threat of war and climate change. The importance of sharing worries, working together, and planning for hopeful futures at home, in school and in the wider community are introduced as a springboard for classroom discussion.
Themes in the book link across the curriculum, including with PSHE, English, History, Geography and Art.
The story of the two children integrates the arts-based child-centred methods that we used in our research process. These processes are available as dowloadable class activity sheets and the book is accompanied by free online teachers’ notes.
The book, teacher’s notes and activity sheets are all available to download from the Project Resources section. The book can be read as an e-book, and we also have a limited number of free hardcopies available. Please email vipclear@uwe.ac.uk for a copy.
